Upside Down

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 30 people gathered at KLCC park yesterday afternoon for 15 minutes to read newspapers held upside down.

Their action caught the attention of shoppers and tourists, and cameramen from various media captured those reading the dailies sitting on the stairs leading to the park.

The chairman of Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI), Wong Chin Huat, said they were expressing the lack of Press freedom in Malaysia.

Wong said reading the newspapers upside down was to show that newspapers were not applying Press freedom.

He added their action was meant for all media channels in Malaysia and they had no intention of pinpointing any media publication or that their actions were initiated or backed by any political party.

"With the variety of media channels, people are able to make their own judgements and the media must strengthen their professionalism," said Wong.

Also present were Kelab Pemuda Prihatin Putrajaya president, Hishammudin Yeop, and Centre for Independent Journalism communications and publications officer, Yip Wai Fong.
