Kuala Sepetang Railway Land: Perak To Expedite Land Ownership Process
IPOH, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The Perak government will ensure expeditious transfer of ownership of the released railway reserve land in Kuala Sepetang to the residents there.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) had been instructed to conduct a census on the residents there and carry out other processes such as land division into lots.

"We will also discuss the land ownership transfer process with the Railway Asset Management Corporation, as the land's administrator.

"The state government will give land onwership to the residents after the land is no longer gazetted as a government asset in a process carried out by UPEN," he told reporters after officially opening the Greentown Hall in Jalan Hospital, here, Thursday.

He said the Cabinet decision on the railway reserve land was made following negotiations by the state government, which took four to five months, after promising during the Bukit Gantang by-election last March that it would resolve the land issue involving some 300 residents in Kuala Sepetang.

These residents, mostly fishermen, have lived on the land which was previously laid with a railway track connecting Port Weld (now Kuala Sepetang) with Taiping.

Some have been staying there for four generations and paid annual rent to KTMB and the Railway Asset Management Corporation but their exact number could not be determined because some are illegal squatters.

Zambry also expressed his gratitude for the federal government's decision to release the land to the state government, saying it would help residents there.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet decided to release 94.5 hectares of railway reserve land between Taiping and Kuala Sepetang to the state government as it is no longer used for railway operations since 1941.

The state government also agreed to pay RM38 million to the federal government through the Railway Asset Management Corporation.
